What Can Hypnotherapy Do For You?

The answer is that hypnosis can be used to improve your wellbeing, to make you feel much better, mentally and physically. It can certainly improve the quality of your life by helping you to deal with the problems that can debilitate you. You may also be concerned about what hypnosis can do to you.

Hypnosis is not in any way harmful, but it is completely understandable for a beginning hypnotic subject to have some reservations. You may want to ask a few questions to assuage your curiosity and ally your fears. The questions that follow are representative of those most frequently asked of hypnotherapists.

  • When I am in a trance can you make me cluck like a chicken? Bark like a dog?
  • Will I tell you something I've never told anyone? Will I talk about things that are private?
  • Could I stay "frozen" in one position and never come out of it? Could I be stuck in "space"?
  • Could I harm myself?

The answer to all these questions is an emphatic "No". What these questions are getting at is this: can a hypnotherapist make you do something that is embarrassing, shocking or irreversible? Again, the answer is, "No". You will not do anything you do not think is acceptable. That is, you cannot be "made" to violate your own values or accepted terms of behaviour.

It is important for you to remember that a trance state can be terminated by you at any time. It is your choice to enter the trance state, and you can always choose to leave it.

The trance state is an altered state of awareness that will allow access to the subconscious, having reduced the critical analytical interference of the conscious rationalising process. Remember in this state you will hear and know everything that is going on. In this state you are highly suggestible and this is when the therapist can give you all the positive suggestions that you need. You can access long buried traumas and habits that cause you hurt and pain. Then you, with the help of the hypnotherapist, can resolve them. After the session you will feel much better and can continue your normal daily activities, as usual.
